‘Memphis Delta’ continues the experimental composition work started on the ‘Beyond Babylon’ EP. Here, though, the primary constraints on the compositions are not formally laid-out problems, but related to materials: each track uses very specific and strictly limited physical resources.
Another “invisible” conceptual layer is provided by a parallel stream of experimentation using graphic scores. Although none of the tracks on the EP was actually composed using one, their influence permeates each track like a ghost structure.
The result is that each one creates its own coherent and highly individual sound-world where the constraints of the Western tonal system are bypassed entirely. There just aren’t any notes! OK: there are (literally) a handful in one place: we’ll leave you to find out where, and why…
